4.10 Mixed and Multiple Methods Approach

It is undeniable that the use of mixed and multiple methods approaches in educational research has become increasingly popular (Jonson and Onwuegbuzie 2004; Onwuegbuzie and Teddlie 2003; Onwuegbuzie and Leech 2006; Teddlie and Tashakkori 2009). They have a strong appeal to practitioner researchers in that mixed methods can offer ready solutions to data collection problems, while tending to skirt over issues of applicability and relevance. Hence some major methodological difficulties can arise if a mixed methods approach is adopted without careful consideration of its limitations. Jones (2015), referring to the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods in much geography education research, states:they can appeal to teacher-researchers as a more practice-driven and pragmatic option than situating research within a quantitative or qualitative paradigm. However, adopting a mixed research approach does not guarantee fitness for purpose if the design itself lacks rigour and is fragmented and inconsistent … justifying both why and when a quantitative or qualitative component has priority is an important requirement in mixed method research (p. 122)
